This is a year-long course offered to students who have no research opportunity available at their school. This course features:

  • AIM research curriculum and student activities provided in the Canvas learning management system, including the mobile app.
  • Students will complete the online lessons, participate in virtual classroom activities, and engage in one-on-one communication to assist them as they develop their research project.

  • Lessons directly tie to students’ personal research projects. This use-inspired research opportunity increases the relevance to the student.
  • An interdisciplinary approach incorporates multiple subjects into student-specific, project-based learning.
  • The Science Coach provides:
    • Support for research topics
    • Assistance with research design
    • Help with technical questions
    • Weekly virtual meetings
    • Oversight of student progress with support from the parent/adult in charge.
  • Students will have access to a database of professional mentors. With teacher support, students are responsible for pursuing mentor connections.
  • Biology science lab access is available in the St. Louis area (a full list of available equipment is provided upon request). Additional lab access is possible through an acquired mentor.
  • Students receive a formal completion certificate at the end of the course.
  • This is a dual enrollment course where you have the opportunity to earn 3 credit hours of a 297 level biology class through Missouri Southern State University. No grade or credit will transfer to your high school transcript unless you specifically petition your high school to accept the credit. We have had students be successful with this process. There is a nominal credit hour fee paid directly to the university.

Science Coach students have been successful at regional, national, and international scientific competitions, winning almost two million dollars in scholarships and prize money.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) Does the student work with a mentor 1:1?
The Science Coach will help the student find a mentor but there is no guarantee. We have many volunteers who often fill that role, but it depends on the research topic. The student is taught how to request a mentor, which often takes a month or two.
2) Does the mentor guide the student to pick a research topic?
The Science Coach guides the student to pick a research topic, then we help the student find a mentor in that area.  It is most important that the student is conducting research in a topic area of personal interest.
3) Since the program is virtual, does the mentor suggest places where the student can find the labs to do the research?
The AIM Online Research Class is a virtual program. If the student is in/near St. Louis, we do have a biology lab and assistance that students can use. We also have insurance that covers students working in any lab that agrees to host a student.  Realize most labs require students to be 16 years of age.
